Artist statement :
From an early age, my grandfather, who was also a photographer exposed me to photography and I become fascinated how photography can remain the memory of lost time and how it can weave fiction and reality to challenge the way we feel and sense images.
While I was studying at Parsons school for design in 1998, after my grandfathers sudden death I started to take pictures of landscapes. It was as if to follow his spirit. Studying the natural world, which brings me so much awe, helped me to understand that the world is constantly changing and that nothing stays the same. My works "Spirit of the Earth, Luminouslandscape, Past • Present • Future was to explore the changing world and finding a way to resolve personal histories and photographic explorations through landscapes.
In February 2009, I took pictures of people in a tuberculosis hospital in Cambodia. The people in these photographs have helped me appreciate the way life continues under difficult and intense circumstances. I went to Cambodia as an volunteer member of an organization called, Friends Without A Border. I was inspired by the care shown by the people running the organization and the good it does for the Cambodians.
After returning to New York, I was faced with some dark, complex fears around the ambiguity and intensities of human nature. I am being forced to explore parts of myself and my identity. I have decided to do a series to express the suffering we face in this society through self-portaits. By doing this body of work, I hope to touch on the beauty of life and the pleasure of our divine spirits. By exploring these dark fears, I was able to touch the fragile state of ones inner-self. As an artist I always wish to stay true to my work and appreciate my family and friends who have been supportive of my life.
